- SAT 1
In April, 1999. the
Government of Nigeria established the National Space Research and Development
Agency (NASRDA) with a mandate to organise all space science and technology
related activities in order to make a greater impact on development effort in
Nigeria. Subsequently, in June, 2001 the National Space Policy and Programmes
was approved, thereby creating an enabling environment for the achievement of
the objectives of this agenda.
CONCEPT OF
NIGER-SAT 1
Nigerian Satellite
known as Nigeria Sat-1 is the Nigerian Contribution to the International
Disaster Monitoring Constellation (DMC) project. It was launched on 27
September, 2003 in Plesetsk, Russia under a seven-nation constellation being
handle by a Russian firm, Cosmos. The satellites ground control station is and
is controlled by 15 Nigerian Engineers in Abuja (trained in Surrey, United
Kingdom). The operation is supervised by NASDRA. Nigeria Sat-1 is one of the five satellites which will make
up a network called DMC
The Disaster
Monitoring Constellation (DMC) is an International Co-operation in space,
bringing together Organization from seven countries. The countries are United
Kingdom (uk), China, Algeria, Turkey, Thailand and Vietnam. The DMC consortium
(or group) is forming the ever microsatellite constellation bringing remarkable
Earth Observation capabilities both naturally to the individual satellite
owners and internationally to benefit world-wide humanitarian aid effort.
GENERAL FEATURES OF
NIGERIA SAT-1
1.
It is a product of advanced technology in
microsatellite, operating in low Earth orbit.
2.
It weighs 100kg
3.
It is constellation (company) with six other
satellites; and this gives in added advantage of global coverage and daily
revisit with the provision of real-time data.
4.
It provide opportunity to develop appropriate
payloads to solve local problems.
5.
It provides opportunity for capacity building in
satellite technology.
6.
It provide opportunity for bridging the digital
divide within and across Africa.
7.
Ground control station is located in Asokoro,
Abuja for the control and operation of the satellite.
OPERATION OF
NIGERIA SAT-1
NigeriaSat 1 is for
Earth's observation. Earth's observation here means that the satellite will
take photos or image of Nigeria piece of land on which it is focused and beam
back to the ground station for use in various areas of socio-economic
development.
USES OF
NIGERIASAT-1
1.
To give advance warning of natural disasters like
flood, earthquakes, volcanic eruption etc
2.
To avoid or manage occurrence of man-made
disaster like oil pollution, desertification, erosion, forest fire and
deforestation.
3.
Used in agriculture for mapping, land use
planning management of sustainable grazing, forest logging, crop inventory and
yield forecast.
4.
Solid mineral exploration and exploitation,
including general geological mapping and map update or revision as well as
differentiating host mineral area in oil, gas and solid mineral exploitation.
5.
Mapping of state and international boundaries,
planning and mapping of terrain traffic for defence and securities purpose.
6.
Used in public health delivery to establish the
relationship between malaria vectors and environment that breed malaria.
7.
To provide the technology needed to bring
education to all parts of the country via Distance Learning.
8.
Demographic uses such as mapping and planning of
population surveys, census enumeration areas as well as mapping, planning and
monitoring of rural urban growth.
9.
Used in water resources development and
management including assessment of the quality and quantity of surface and underground
water, rainfall prediction as well as integrated water resources management on
drought and other disaster forecast.
