CONTENT: -
NICOM- SAT 1
NigComSat-1 is a
Nigerian Communication Satellite. It was launched on 14 may, 2007 in China by
China Great Wall Industry Corporation
(GWIC) a subsidiary of China Aerospace Science and Technology
Corporation (CAST). It became the first Africa geosynchronous Communication
Satellite.
Nig ComSat- 1 has 4
gateways which are located in South Africa, China, Italy and Northern Nigeria.
The satellite is suppose to have a lifespan of 15 years and is to be monitored
and tracked by a ground station in Abuja while the Chinese firm, GWIC, is
through its ground station in Keshgar in North- West China is to monitor it,
but Nigeria lost the satellite on11 November 2008, in orbit due to a fault with
the solar panel cause by a cut to the fuel supply link of the panel resulting
in a solar flare or solar array failure. The Chinese authority replaced the
lost satellite and was tagged NIGCOMSAT R. it was successfully launched on 19
December 2011. NIGCOMSAT- 1 purpose is for communication. This goes a long way
to boost information and Communication Technology (ICT) in Nigeria.

It was based on the Chinese DFH-4 satellite bus.

It has over five tones wet mass

It has 40 hybrid transponder and 28 active
transponder i.e 4C-band, 14KU-band, 8Ka-band and 2L-band.

It has an hybrid payload design, stronger
footprints and centre beam that is meant to maintain it in orbit for a maximum
of 15 years.
USES OF NIGC0M-SAT

TELEPRESENCE: This means to be present by electronic
means in order to render services. It includes tele-education (i.e Distance
Learning), tele-medicine (i.e distance curing of illness and disease),
e-Government (i.e electronic Government), e-commerce (electronics commerce). In
all these the resource persons are not bodily present; instead, they render
their services by electronic means.
2.
BROADCASTING: This involves mainly television
broadcast.
3.
TELECOMMUNICATION: This involve the use of
telephone, mobile phones etc. This will also go a long way to reduce the cost
of making phone calls within and outside the country thus bringing the much
needed growth of the industrial and commercial sector of the economy.
4.
INTERNET AND MULTIMEDIA: This involves
communication and exchange of information through the internet.
