The satellite is suppose to have a lifespan of 15 years and is to be monitored and tracked by a ground station in Abuja while the Chinese firm, GWIC, is through its ground station in Keshgar in North- West China is to monitor it, but Nigeria lost the satellite on11 November 2008, in orbit due to a fault with the solar panel cause by a cut to the fuel supply link of the panel resulting in a solar flare or solar array failure. The Chinese authority replaced the lost satellite and was tagged NIGCOMSAT R. it was successfully launched on 19 December 2011. NIGCOMSAT- 1 purpose is for communication.
